Hot oatmeal has always been one of our favorites here. There is something about warm delicious oats that just make the most soothing way to start your day. We have always bought local oats from our friends at Top of the Hill Farms as well as quinoa from Prairie Quinoa
Buying Manitoba organic oats and quinoa from local farms feels good.. We use them for homemade granola and hot oats as well as cookies and baking.
Below is the recipe for hot oats, keep in mind I measure with my heart and use a spurtle for stirring which is as much fun to say as it is to use.
Cavers Hot Oats
Add 1/4 cup quinoa to a pan with about 2 cups of water and bring to boil, maybe a little more . Add a pinch of salt.
Once boiling reduce heat and slowly add 3/4 cup of oats. Stir with a Spurtle. This is the fun part, constantly stirring with this very cool kitchen gadget.

I often add dried fruit like dates, prunes or raisins, feel free to add what you love. If you are using fresh fruit wait until everything is cooked and add just before you eat.
Cook on medium heat until thick and the oats are done. This takes around 10 minutes. Put into bowls and add your favorite toppings. I use pistachios and other nuts and seeds plus yogurt and fresh fruit.
Enjoying a hot breakfast is easy and such a great way to start the day. We often dry apples to use as well. In this case we had fresh apples that we stored in a cooler. Hidden Rose apples make the best pink addition.

Enjoy!
